Each year, U.S. Southern Command helps send approximately 5,000 students from the AOR (Area of Responsibility) to attend U.S. military training programs across the Department of Defense, to include the WHINSEC- Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (School of the Americas), the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies, the Inter-American Defense College, and the Inter- American Air Forces Academy. DoD Report on Training of Foreign Operations Forces (JCET Report FY2009) Every year U.S. Southern Command sponsors 7military exercises specifically designed to facilitate interoperability, build capabilities, and provide venues to share best practices among the military and security forces in the region. Our largest multinational 21 exercise, PANAMAX 2010, brought together eighteen nations from the Western Hemisphere to train for the defense of the Panama Canal. Other key FMI exercises in the region include TRADEWINDS, FUERZAS COMANDO, and UNITAS.
