|March 20-29, 2015 Delegation to El Salvador|
Join SOA WATCH Founder Fr. Roy Bourgeois and SOAW Latin America Liaison Brigitte Gynther in a delegation to:
• Commemorate the 35th anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar Romero by joining in the celebration activities in his memory
• Participate in Citizen Diplomacy effort to ask the government of El Salvador to stop sending soldiers to the SOA/WHINSEC
• Learn about the achievements and challenges of the
FMLN government and social movements, including efforts to address the root
causes of migration and violence, as well as struggles against destructive multi-national mining and US policies.
El Salvador is a tiny nation that has experienced enormous suffering. Over 70,000 people lost their lives in the 1980's, many at the orders of SOA graduates. Yet El Salvador is also an inspiration as an effective example of transforming a grassroots resistance movement into a successful democratic political party, resulting in the March 2014 election of former FMLN commander Salvador Sanchez Ceren to the Presidency.
The SOA WATCH movement was born from inspiration from the martyrs of El Salvador. The assassinations - at the hands of SOA graduates - of Monseñor Oscar Romero, four US churchwomen and six Jesuit priests and their aides, led Fr. Roy Bourgeois to launch his tireless struggle to close the School of the Americas thirty years ago. Today, learn about the reality of El Salvador, the struggles and the achievements, and join Fr. Roy in requesting the government of El Salvador stop sending military officers to the SOA/WHINSEC.
