SOAW Delegation to Mexico June 21 to July 1, 2015 PDF Print E-mail

From June 21 to July 1, 2015, join SOAW in a delegation to Mexico to examine firsthand the impact of the US War on Drugs, which includes millions in funding for the Mexican military and police.  Since the "Drug War" has started in Mexico, over 100,000 people have died and 30,000 have been disappeared.  The US Plan Merida funnels massive amounts of money to the Mexican government despite widespread repression and death, including targeted repression of social movements and those who speak out.

The September 26, 2014 disappearance of the 43 students in Guerrero, Mexico galvanized a massive resistance movement demanding the students be returned alive and an end to the Narco-state in Mexico.  The legitimacy of the government has been called into question.  Additionally, social movements defending land and rights throughout Mexico are routinely targeted as militarization and repression is used to silence those who speak out.

This delegation will explore the impacts of the US Plan Merida on Mexico, learn about the demands of Mexican society for an end to the Drug War, and visit with social movements struggling to defend their rights and create alternatives to the ultra-neoliberal militarized plan being imposed on Mexico.  The delegation will begin in Mexico City and travel to the Mexican states of Guerrero and Chiapas to visit with organizations and communities struggling for justice.
